Rock stars are so 20th century. Who wants to fork out $56 plus God knows how much in surcharges to see their favorite band anymore? The answer should be: nobody. So, if you get your rocks of to stadium-within-stadium alt-rock acts like Muse, we have a suggestion.
Get a new favorite band.
Portugal. The Man, perhaps? We think yes. On Thurs., Aug. 27, the Wasilla, Ala. alt-postpunk-country-jammers packed the Crépe Place in Santa Cruz like a sardine box. Seeing the guys play on the very same floor upon which the audience stood was certainly a treat—topped only by grabbing some fresh air after the show on the Crépe Place patio to talk with lead singer/songwriter/effortlessly cool dude, John Baldwin Gourley.
The group tore the joint up, playing material from every one of their studio albums, including songs yours truly—a professed P.TM fanatic—didn't recognize. It would be hard to identify a highlight in the night's show. Perhaps it was the opening song, "Church Mouth" of the group's 2007 LP of the same name, which lapsed into a chilling rendition of "One is the Loneliest Number" by Three Dog Night, only to return to Gourley's frantic refrain: "I'll be better when the sleep comes an finds me!"
Or, it could be the encore-inducing singalong finale of "AKA M80 the Wolf," which had the entire crowd singing along: "I am but a man/but a proud proud man/but a proud proud man."
If you weren't there... well... you screwed up. But fortunately we have many of the aforementioned highlights in the above and following videos.
Thanks to Kate from Belarus (yeah... Belarus) for hooking us up with the pictures!
