Drinking with The Mumlers at The Blank Club San Jose
The header of The Blank Club’s website reads “Live music, DJ’s, dancing, serious drinking.”
Verily, I profess, truer words were never spoken. The Blank certainly has dancing (’80s night is my favorite). Dancing obviously needs a DJ (Basura on ’80s night). They also have live music, as evidenced by last night’s Mumlers show.
But the drinking, oh, the drinking! Blank bartender Craig Yamato pours them strong, and, if you know him like Cinebarfly founder Mitchell Parker does, he’s likely to kick you several for free. Fortunately for us flies, and for you all out there in internet land, we have a visual record of last night’s shenanigans. In a word, we pulled a blank.
Support came from Ugly Winner, a local San Jose three-piece, whose pleasant post-punk-alt melodies served to further diversify a bill that the Mumlers alone would have made eclectic with their horns, keys and squeezeboxes. Punky, female-led San Francisco three-piece Schande were direct support.
Check out the Mumlers performing “Tangled Up With You,” (at the end of the video) as well as an interview with KSJS DJ German Toledo, who gives his (somewhat drunken, but insightful) thoughts on the San Jose indie-folksters.
